Stargazers in Pakistan are in for a treat to view the first of three supermoons in 2025, which will be visible on the night of October 7.

Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) said that the supermoon will appear at 8:47pm, rising from the east and setting in the west just before dawn time.

What is supermoon?

A supermoon occurs when the Moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, making it appear larger and brighter than usual—up to 14% bigger and nearly 30% brighter than a typical full moon.

SUPARCO noted that during the supermoon, the Moon will be at a distance of 224,599 miles (361,457 kilometres) from Earth, expected to appear 6.6% larger and 13% brighter than a regular full moon.

Skywatchers will also be able to spot Saturn near the Moon on Monday and Tuesday evenings, adding to the spectacle.

Moreover, the brightest supermoon of the year is expected to occur in November, when the moon will be 221,817 miles away from Earth.

When to see supermoon in Pakistan?

Experts noted that the best times for Pakistani viewers will be at moonrise and moonset, particularly at the latter, when the large moon is near the horizon, creating a spectacular effect.

The October supermoon will be visible not only in Pakistan but across much of the world, promising a dazzling view for astronomy enthusiasts everywhere. Two more supermoons are set to follow on November 5 and December 5.
