In a groundbreaking move marking a stepping stone for wider adoption of environment-friendly electric vehicles (EVs), Pakistan’s first electric bus (e-bus) service has been launched in Lahore, gaining nationwide traction.
Titled “Welcome to Maryam Nawaz Sharif Green Punjab,” the inauguration ceremony was conducted by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
Pakistan's first electric bus service commenced from the Railway Station up to Green Town with the Punjab CM becoming the first passenger.
Regarding the expansion of the e-bus fleet for the project, Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar said that 500 more buses will be added for public service.
The News reported that thousands of such e-buses are needed to cater to the full capacity of regular commuters in nine cities across Punjab, however, the service will be expanded to Faisalabad and Gujranwala soon.
It was also learned that the provincial metropolis was slated to observe the rollout of two new mass transit systems, one of which was brought about by the launch of the e-bus in question, starting from the railway station up to Green Town.
Addressing the e-bus service's pilot project ceremony, the Punjab CM fixed the fare price of the electric bus service at Rs20 and highlighted that students, elderly citizens and differently-abled individuals will be allowed to travel free of cost.
