Apple has released new betas for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 for developers, introducing Apple Intelligence features such as new writing tools, Siri enhancements, Mail improvements, Messages updates, photo enhancements, and transcription features.

Similarly, Safari, Apple’s web browser, has received an Apple Intelligence feature update with the iOS 18.1 beta, now offering web page summaries.

Safari’s summarise tool

Safari’s Reader mode has been updated with a new feature in the iOS 18.1 beta, including a table of contents with headings and subheadings.

Here’s how it works:

  • When you open Reader view, there’s a new ‘Summarise’ button at the top, similar to the Apple Intelligence logo.
  • Pressing the button triggers an animation that scans the contents of the page with a purple Apple Intelligence glow, which takes a second or two.
  • Once the scan is complete, a page summary will be available.
  • On iPhone, the summary appears at the top of the page, while on iPad and Mac it is located in the sidebar.

This summary feature seems useful, and the initial beta version is likely to improve over time.

By incorporating summaries into Safari’s Reader mode, Apple ensures that the summaries are only visible when Reader mode is activated, rather than in the standard website view. Therefore, users must open Reader mode and manually request the summary.

It remains unclear whether this feature will be available in the future for users without an Apple Intelligence-supported device.
