The federal government on Thursday appointed Muhammad Amin Khan Lodhi as the deputy governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) for a period of five years.

Before taking charge as deputy governor, Lodhi was working as the executive director of the Monetary Policy and Research Group at the SBP. He led the preparation of macroeconomic analyses and projections for the SBP's Monetary Policy Committee.

Who is Muhammad Amin Khan Lodhi?

Lodhi is a skilful central banker, with an experience of over 26 years in both formulation and implementation of monetary and exchange rate policies in Pakistan. Lodhi completed his Master’s degree in Development Economics from Williams College, US, and in Economics from the University of Karachi.

Lodhi conducted extensive research in various areas of Pakistan's economy:

  • Monetary policy and inflation
  • Fiscal policy and debt management
  • The financial system

It should be noted that Lodhi has been completely involved in other landmark projects at the SBP as well, including the adoption of the market-based exchange rate regime; designing and implementing the interest rate corridor framework for executing monetary policy; and managing and reforming the Primary Dealers System of government securities.

The newly-appointed deputy governor also led the team which created the central bank's five-year strategic plan, SBP Vision 2028.
