Almost ten years after offering a digital time capsule for people's memories, Snapchat is introducing a price for its Memories function. The company has announced that it will soon limit free Memories storage to 5GB, a huge change to the way users save their Snaps.

Snapchat indicated that those who exceed the 5GB free storage will be able to export their Memories or subscribe to a new storage plan or pay for a storage plan to keep it.

The app will offer several paid plans, beginning with an introductory plan of 100GB for $1.99 per month. Snapchat+ users pay $3.99 per month for 250GB, and Snapchat Platinum subscribers will have access to 5TB for $15.99 per month.

The company confirmed to TechCrunch that if a user exceeds their plan's limit but does not subscribe, then the user's older Snaps will be kept while newer Snaps will be deleted to keep the user under the 5GB limit.

Snapchat has also given users 12 months of temporary storage to clear their accounts or select a paid plan.

Some users have already decided to export their Memories so they do not have to pay for storage. Memories can be downloaded directly to a phone’s camera roll, but only in batches of 100, which could make saving thousands of Snaps a time-consuming process.
