Sony may be taking steps to address a common complaint among gamers: the need for frequent controller charging. According to a recent patent, the company is experimenting with a solar-powered PlayStation controller that could eliminate the hassle of plugging in the gamepad.
The PlayStation DualSense controller, released alongside the PS5 in November 2020, introduced innovative features like adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, making gaming experiences more immersive.
However, many players have criticized the controller’s battery life, as long gaming sessions often require recharging. Sony is exploring the use of “photovoltaic elements” within the controller’s design, allowing it to charge using solar energy. This would enable players to power up their controllers using sunlight, reducing the need to connect them to a charger.
While the patent offers an exciting glimpse into the future of PlayStation controllers, it’s important to note that Sony has not officially confirmed any plans to release a solar-powered controller.
Moreover, patents are often filed by companies as part of ongoing research, but many never make it to the market. The diagrams included in the patent show a controller similar to the current DualSense design, indicating that the solar charging feature could be added without altering the controller’s overall look.
Although it’s unclear if the solar-powered controller will ever come to life, it would undoubtedly address a key issue for gamers who seek longer playtime without interruption.
Alongside this patent, Sony has also revealed other concepts, such as a rewind feature for game saves, hinting that the company continues to innovate and explore new possibilities for enhancing the gaming experience.
