In a bid to reduce the number of its live service projects in the works, Sony has recently cancelled two unannounced live service games, including a God of War title.
However, just a few years back, Sony had a dozen such games under development, but that number has been rapidly decreasing. By the end of 2023, only six remained, following the successful launch of Helldivers II and the disappointing release of Concord in 2024.
Cancelled live service projects by Sony
One of the cancelled projects was being developed by Bend Studios, known for Syphon Filter and Days Gone. The other was a live-service God of War game that Bluepoint Games had been working on for the past few years.
It's notable that Bluepoint Games, acquired by Sony in recent years, has a history of creating ports and remasters, including Demon’s Souls, the first three Uncharted games, and Shadow of the Colossus.
The live service model, popularised by games like Fortnite, has proven challenging for many developers. Titles such as Concord, Anthem, and Redfall have also highlighted the difficulties in maintaining player engagement and delivering consistent content.
Sony has already cancelled several live service projects, including a Spider-Man game revealed by the Insomniac ransomware breach, Twisted Metal, and a Destiny-linked game from Bungie called Payback.
Moreover, despite these setbacks, there are still upcoming live service games to look forward to. Bungie is working on a revived Marathon extraction shooter, and Haven Studios is developing Fairgames, a PvP heist title.
