Starlink, Elon Musk's satellite internet service, is officially coming to Pakistan. This move is intended to increase access to the internet across the country, especially in locations with less or no connectivity.
Starlink provides internet to subscribers via low-orbit satellites at a higher level of speed and reliability than many current internet services.
Starlink to launch in Pakistan
Reportedly, Starlink has registered to begin operations in Pakistan and is prepared to comply with all local regulations and laws. The Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board (P-SARB) is currently developing a new policy for Satellite Internet activities that will delineate the process for these types of companies to acquire licenses.
With the completion of P-SARB's policy, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will then issue Starlink a formal license to operate.
The roll-out of Starlink is expected to enhance Pakistan's digital economy and infrastructure, and officials expect it will expand online access that will contribute to delivery on its government's digital economy goals while offering new opportunities in new sectors, particularly in underserved regions and sectors.
Moreover, the Federal Minister for IT, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, recently attended a workshop hosted by P-SARB with global tech firms including Amazon, Shanghai Telecom, and OneWeb.
Among these, Starlink is the first to formally apply for a license under the developing framework. There is also talk that Elon Musk might attend the launch event in Pakistan later this year.
Authorities have confirmed that Starlink’s services will not pose any threat to national security and will be run under full government oversight.
