Apple’s App Store is known for taking a 30% commission on in-app purchases. This fee has made it difficult for many iOS developers to grow their business.

However, Stripe is offering a way to bypass this fee, thanks to a recent court ruling in the Epic vs Apple case.

The news came from a ruling by Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who ordered that Apple provide developers with the ability to include external payment links within their applications.

This means that developers no longer have to rely on Apple's payment system.

Stripe bypasses Apple fees

In retaliation, Stripe immediately posted a guide that demonstrates to iOS application developers how they can utilise Stripe Checkout to accept payments outside of the App Store and save money and have more control.

Stripe's solution employs an outside website. The user is taken to a secure, Stripe-hosted page to finalise the payment.

This enables developers to sidestep Apple's 30% commission.

Stripe only charges 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction, which is significantly less expensive.

On X (formerly Twitter), Stripe product manager Michael Luo posted the update as a big day for iOS developers.

Even Ruby on Rails creator and 37Signals co-founder David Heinemeier Hansson took to celebrating the shift, writing it allows for many new apps.
