The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has successfully launched Pakistan’s first indigenous electro-optical satellite, EO-1.

The satellite was launched from China’s Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre (JSLC), marking a significant milestone in Pakistan’s space exploration journey and aligning with the goals of the National Space Policy.

The EO-1 satellite is equipped with advanced electro-optical sensors capable of capturing valuable data and high-resolution images of the Earth’s surface by detecting and measuring reflected or emitted solar radiation.

According to SUPARCO, the satellite is set to revolutionise various sectors in Pakistan, including agriculture, urban planning, environmental monitoring, and disaster management. Its advanced capabilities will enable precision farming, monitor infrastructure development, provide timely updates on natural disasters, and support strategies for natural resource extraction and conservation.

“This remarkable milestone marks a giant leap forward in Pakistan’s journey towards self-reliance and technological excellence in space exploration,” the space agency stated.

SUPARCO Chairman Mohammad Yousaf Khan dedicated the achievement to the relentless efforts of the organisation’s engineers and scientists. He also expressed gratitude to the government for its support, emphasising that the launch symbolises Pakistan’s commitment to leveraging space technology for national progress and sustainable development.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the nation, as well as the scientists and engineers, on the successful launch of the EO-1 satellite, calling it a proud moment for Pakistan.

“Spearheaded by SUPARCO, this demonstrates our nation’s growing capabilities in space science and technology,” he noted.
