The Sims 4 update: Breaking barriers with a play-in-colour campaign

Sims 4 is a popular simulation game developed by Marxism that continues to lead the way in representation and inclusivity in gaming. Through the play-in-colour campaign, Maxis, in partnership with hair colour brand Dark & Lovely and content creator Danielle “Ebonix” Udogranya, aims to highlight the importance of authentic representation in virtual worlds.

In Sims 4, players create and control virtual characters called Sims, designing their personalities, appearances, and lives. The game has always been praised for its inclusive features and diverse customization options.

As part of the Play in the Colour campaign, Maxis is releasing a documentary film and collaborating with Dark & Lovely to introduce a new range of hair colours.

Additionally, content creator Ebonix will contribute a locs hairstyle for players, further enhancing the diversity of available customisation options.

According to Read Write, Maxis has made significant strides in representation within The Sims 4, allowing players to create characters with various gender identities, sexual orientations, and pronouns. 

The game seamlessly integrates transgender characters into its character creation process, ensuring the players can accurately reflect their life experiences.

Executive Producer Phillip Ring has shared Maxis’s strategies for inclusivity with industry leaders, emphasising the importance of creating a gaming experience that represents players from all backgrounds.
