Threads is testing new features, claiming to bring user experience more in line with that of X (formerly Twitter) and the social network Bluesky. The Meta-owned company is internally prototyping the ability to set a display name and add a cover image to profiles.

According to TechCrunch, a spokesperson for the company confirmed that the two features are not currently available to the public. The new additions were first spotted by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, who often finds upcoming features while they’re still under development.

Threads is integrated with Instagram, users are unable to change their display names, as the social network automatically pulls them from Instagram.

If someone transitions from X (formerly Twitter) to Threads, they might be required to retain the same username on Threads, enabling their X followers to locate them easily on Meta’s platform. Currently, there’s no direct way to achieve this, as users would need to change their Instagram username to reflect the same on Threads, which is far from ideal.

Developer Alessandro Paluzzi recently shared screenshots on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing a user’s display name appearing on their Threads profile and posts. Additionally, users may soon have the option to change their display name up to twice within 14 days.

This feature could introduce a new level of profile customization, similar to what users enjoy on platforms like X and Bluesky. By allowing enhanced personalization, the feature aims to let users add more character to their accounts and capture the attention of viewers.

However, the timeline for Meta to roll out these features is still under wraps.
