Amid uncertainty looming over its future in the United States, TikTok Shop, the e-commerce arm of social media giant TikTok, has announced its expansion into France, Germany, and Italy to further strengthen its footprint in Europe.
The move comes in the midst of a gloom setting upon TikTok’s future in the US, where its Chinese owner, ByteDance, is obliged by a law to secure an American buyer to avoid a potential ban.
According to Reuters, TikTok Shop has been operating in the UK since 2021 and launched in the US in September 2023, making strong sales during the holiday season.
The e-commerce platform has been working to attract more Europe-based sellers, as many of its merchants currently ship products directly from China.
"In France, Germany, and Italy, we are already working with merchants to get their products listed, and TikTok Shop will be available to our users from next Monday," said Jan Wilk, head of operations at TikTok Shop UK.
Carrefour, the supermarket chain, will join TikTok Shop in France, while German retailers AboutYou and Cosnova are scheduled to start selling fashion and cosmetics on the online retail juggernaut.
TikTok Shop is known for its discounted products and live-streamed sales, but Wilk noted the platform aims to diversify, pointing to the UK’s sales of luxury items like second-hand Birkin bags.
