
Japan’s Toyota Motors plans to construct a battery plant for electric vehicles (EVs) in the Southwestern prefecture of Fukuoka, supplying its luxury Lexus brand of cars, Nikkei Business Daily reported.
There’s talk of Toyota wanting to make Kyushu, the island Fukuoka happens to be located on, a central part of its battery supply chain and a base for the Asian market.
A spokesperson referenced the report as being distinctive from any announcement the company has made up to this point. However, they acknowledged the company’s ambition to strengthen its EV battery infrastructure, for which it has already been undertaking several initiatives.

Toyota manufactures its Lexus line of cars at its Miyata plant, a subsidiary of Toyota Motors Kyushu.
The popular automaker has announced plans to produce next-generation battery-powered EVs from 2026, manufactured by its EV-focused unit, BEV factory.
There’s a target of having 3.5 million units sold by 2030, just under half will be produced by the BEV factory, for context, the company sold 104,000 EV units in 2023. Nikkei which didn’t disclose its source also reported on a lack of information regarding the investment value and start date for construction.
