In a bid to revive popular short-video platform, US President Donald J Trump has signed an executive order delaying the ban on TikTok in the United States of America.

This significant development took place following the inauguration ceremony where the 78-year-old Republican leader took oath as the 47th President of the US, marking a comeback after four years.

US TikTok ban dismissed for 75 days

In the executive order, Trump directed the Attorney General not to enforce the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), the act that banned TikTok in the US on Sunday, January 19.

“While there has been no violation of the statute, even after the expiration of the above-specified period, the Department of Justice shall not take any action to enforce the Act,” stated the order.

The order also directs the Justice Department not to impose any penalties against companies, including Apple, Google, and Oracle that work with TikTok, for 75 days.

Notably, the ByteDance-owned short-video platform used by 170 million Americans went briefly offline in the US over the weekend but later restored following Trump’s social media announcement that he was planning an executive order.

"Essentially with TikTok I have the right to sell it or close it," Trump said from the Oval Office after signing the order.

He also noted that his administration will work on a joint venture between the US and other undisclosed entities.
