Uber has introduced a unique water transport service on the famous Dal Lake in Srinagar, using the iconic Shikara boats. The service allows tourists and locals to book rides on traditional wooden boats through the Uber app.

Shikaras are said to be the most beautiful designs found in the region, made with cosy canopies to attract tourists. The Uber service provides a convenient way to hail boat rides. Customers could book 12 hours ahead to 15 days into the future.

Uber’s boat-hailing service

This is the first water-hailing service for Uber in India, though such alternatives are already available in cities like London. About 4,000 Shikaras already navigate across the Dal Lake for both tourists and locals.

The new initiative aims at fusing technology with tradition. "Uber Shikara is our humble attempt to give travellers a seamless experience for their Shikara ride," said the president of Uber India and South Asia Prabhjeet Singh.

Notably, Uber will not charge a commission for these rides, meaning that the entire ticket amount directly reaches the hands of the Shikara operators.

The reaction from boat operators is mixed, with some believing this service will attract more tourists and improve business, as bookings can now be made in advance. On the other hand, others feel it might not significantly impact their earnings.

This service not only highlights the beauty of Dal Lake but also promotes sustainable tourism by supporting local boat operators. With Uber stepping into Srinagar’s traditional Shikara business, visitors can now enjoy the scenic ride with added convenience.
