Volkswagen is finally bringing a low-cost electric vehicle (EV), as it has announced to debut its new budget-friendly EV next month priced at around €20,000 (around $20,800).
The new EV could be the ID.1, a model that Volkswagen has been teasing since 2022. If launched at this price, it would be one of the most affordable EVs compared to models like the Nissan Leaf, which starts at over $28,000.
Volkswagen ID.1 EV launch
Volkswagen’s current cheapest EV in the US is the ID.4, which costs around $40,000. Recently, a leaked concept image hints at the name “ID.one,” which aligns with VW’s earlier plans for an entry-level EV based on the ID.
Volkswagen has confirmed that this car will launch in 2027, matching earlier timelines for the ID.1. The company is focusing on making EVs more accessible. It is also working on another budget-friendly EV, the ID. 2all, which is expected to cost €25,000 (around $26,000).
Moreover, both the vehicles will use an upgraded version of Volkswagen’s modular battery platform, the same one found in models like the ID.4 and ID Buzz.
Furthermore, Volkswagen is also cutting costs to improve its financial position. It recently reached a deal with a labour union in Germany to reduce its workforce by 35,000 employees, saving billions of dollars per year.
