Considering rising cyber attacks globally, the internet was abuzz with claims that Spotify had been hacked under the guise of a widespread outage affecting Spotify users.
To clear the air amassing around this rumour, the company has firmly refuted these claims, assuring users the issue was of a technical nature and did not stem from any hacking attempt.
Was Spotify under attack on 16 April
Thousands of users on 16 April worldwide were reportedly unable to access Spotify. Outage tracking site DownDetector showed that over 48,000 users faced problems with the app and web player.
The disruption quickly led to rumours of a possible hack, especially after reports surfaced earlier in the week about the controversial online forum 4chan fell victom to a cyberattack.
Spotify responded through its official support account on X (formerly known as Twitter) to clarify the reason behind the incident.
“We are aware of the outage and working to resolve it as soon as possible. The reports of this being a security hack are false,” the post read.
The company restored services the same day and later reassured users: “All clear – thanks for your patience. Get in touch with @SpotifyCares if you still need help.”
Although the cause of the issue has not been disclosed, the music streaming giant has maintained that its systems are secure and no user data was compromised during the outage.
