Amid increasing cases of data breaches and digital surveillance, the government of Pakistan is set to launch "Beep," a secure messaging platform specifically designed for government employees.

This app has been developed locally and is expected to serve as a viable WhatsApp alternative with enhanced cybersecurity and all data localisation features.

The announcement was made during a briefing to the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication, chaired by Syed Amin Ul Haque, on Monday.

As per details given by the National Information Technology Board (NITB), key features of Beep include encrypted messaging, audio and video calls, conference calling for over 100 participants, an additional layer of security, and data hosting within Pakistan.

It should be noted that the rollout of Beep will take place in phases, with the core infrastructure, including data centres, based in Pakistan to ensure full control over sensitive communications.

What sets it apart from WhatsApp, which stores data on foreign servers, Beep guarantees 100% safety of user data.

Zarar Khan, secretary of the IT ministry, stated that a thorough cybersecurity assessment is being conducted for the app.

The government is reportedly planning to officially launch Beep by June 30, 2025, with further details about its design and features expected in the near future.
