WhatsApp has started rolling out a new feature to update users about unread chats, a testament to the messaging platform's committment to clearing a backlog of unwillingly left-out messages by users.

The chat notification feature is specifically designed to notify users about messages and updates from certain contacts that WhatsApp automatically selects. Previously, this feature was limited to status updates only, as reported by WABetaInfo

The selection process for these specific contacts relies on an internal algorithm identifying the most frequently interacted contacts. For instance, if a user frequently communicates with a particular contact but forgets to read their messages, WhatsApp will gently remind them about the unread messages.

It’s worth noting that this algorithm applies only to the latest WhatsApp update. If any user reinstalls the app after engaging with it previously, WhatsApp will be required to reevaluate these interactions, since the information is removed from the backup.

WhatsApp adopts a prudent approach, ensuring that the reminders are pertinent and important for users engaged with the app. For the time being, this innovative feature about unread chats is only available to beta testers. However, it is likely to be rolled out to a wider audience in the near future
