WhatsApp's long-rumoured username feature is reportedly nearing a major change, allowing users to reserve the same handle they use on Instagram or Facebook.
The happening regarding identical usernames across WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram seems imminent as Meta is said to be testing such a system.
This remarkable shift displays WhatsApp's strides to do away with its traditional reliance on phone numbers and opt for a unified identity model across all Meta applications.
Citing reports, TechJuice reported that this feature recently started appearing in the form of beta versions.
The new username system will integrate with Meta’s Accounts Centre, which manages login details, messaging settings, and linked profiles.
This indicates that users will soon be able to claim their Instagram or Facebook handles to use on WhatsApp, making the platform discoverable through usernames and minimising privacy concerns associated with sharing phone numbers.
In addition to identical usernames across Meta apps, WhatsApp is also testing a username lookup tool, enabling users to search for contacts by username rather than phone number, making the identification of unknown contacts easier.
In accordance with a set of rules, usernames will be based on three to thirty characters, including lowercase letters, numbers, underscores, and periods, while restricting domain-like formats.
The rollout of this incredible feature is expected in 2026, with initial reservations prioritised for users with established handles on other Meta platforms.
The business-favouring aspect of WhatsApp's upcoming username feature is that business accounts might receive it earlier than others using the standard version of the platform.
