WhatsApp’s web version is finally on the verge of gaining one of the most anticipated features: the ability to make voice and video calls directly from a web browser.

The Meta-owned messaging platform is currently testing built-in call functionality on its web version, which is expected to rollout to general user base in the coming days.

Until now, WhatsApp users can only make calls through the mobile app or the desktop version, meaning the web version is falling short in comparison, ProPakistani reported, citing WABetaInfo, a renowned and reliable WhatsApp updates tracker.

Rumours brought to light by several industry insiders revealed that WhatsApp has introduced visible call buttons, including video and voice icons, on its web interface, indicating that the feature is actively in the development phase.

A screenshot shared by WABetaInfo depicted a group chat open in a web browser, with call icons displayed at the top of the screen. These icons were similar to the mobile app version in terms of their placement.

The messaging platform had already released a call dropdown menu for beta testers, allowing them to place calls within chats.

With this functionality coming to the web platform, WhatsApp is likely to more closely compete with communication tools like Microsoft Teams and Google Meet, where browser-based calling has been available for far too long.
