Are you curious to know who's actually buying TikTok in the US? If so, US President Donald Trump has announced that a group of “very wealthy people" is set to buy the short-form video platform.
The sale of TikTok US, mandated by a law requiring ByteDance to be divested of its short-form video platform, has been greenlit after months of reeling with uncertainties.
“We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way,” Trump stated in an interview with Fox News, TechCrunch reported, suggesting that he would likely require approval from China, believing that President Xi Jinping would agree to the TikTok sell-off.
While Trump did not get deeper into disclosing the identities of the potential TikTok buyers, he hinted that he would reveal more information in two weeks.
The former US president has been staunchly delaying a bill that would compel TikTok's China-based parent, ByteDance, to either sell the app or face a ban in the US.
Earlier in January, he caused a stir by pointing to a possible establishment of a joint venture between current and new owners, which will result in the US gaining a 50% stake in TikTok.
The idea of ultra-wealthy individuals like Larry Ellison or Elon Musk purchasing the app has also been on his books, though Musk now seems the least likely candidate for TikTok acquisition.
