In a world-class feat in the realm electric mobility, China has launched the world’s largest electric river cargo ship, called Gezoba, measuring 130 metres in length and capable of carrying up to 13,000 tons.
The enormous innovative vessel operates entirely on lithium batteries, featuring 12 battery units with a total capacity of 24,000 kilowatt-hours.
Gezoba, world's largest electric cargo ship's capabilities
The most noteworthy feature of Gezoba is that it is designed for rapid battery replacement and can travel up to 500 kilometres on a single charge.
The world's biggest electric cargo ship is also equipped with advanced smart control technology, not to mention remote navigation and automatic berthing capabilities.
Yin Xinping from the Chinese Academy of Engineering stated that the Gezoba signifies a significant technological leap, integrating large-scale batteries, direct current power systems, and ship-to-shore communications into one platform.
It is believed that the Chinese Gezoba electric ship would save 617 tons of fuel annually and cut carbon emissions by 2,000 tons.
In a separate development, China has seen a remarkable surge in generative artificial intelligence (AI) users, reaching 515 million by June 2025m, double the figure reported six month ago. The report noted that 74.6% of China's AI users are under 40.
Generative AI is being applied in areas such as intelligent search, content creation, and smart devices, validating China's growing influence in the global AI landscape.
