In a distressing turn of events, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and X (formerly Twitter) have failed to come to common terms regarding the latter's registration in Pakistan, indicating that the X ban is unlikely to be lifted soon.
Owing to a clash between Pakistan's local laws and X's policies, the Elon Musk-owned microblogging platform clearly turned down to register or comply with the country.
Citing sources from the telecom regulatory authority, Phone World reported that PTA is not going to make X accessible for users without any clear directives from the government, prompting users to opt for virtual private networks (VPNs) and workarounds in order to get access to the popular social media platform.
In the latest, another botched round of discussions between the PTA and X, the latter upheld its stance against registration in the South Asian country.
The development comes over a year after X was banned in Pakistan on February 17, 2024, upon the directives issued by the Ministry of Interior.
The disagreement between the two bodies is said to be primarily about the presence of inappropriate content on X in Pakistan, which the platform has declined to remove despite several requests made by the PTA.
