X has launched its long-promised chat platform, replacing its basic DM system with a full messaging experience similar to other major apps. The revamped feature, now called Chat, introduces voice and video calling, file sharing, and options to edit or delete sent messages.
It also adds several privacy-focused tools, including end-to-end encryption and alerts when someone takes a screenshot of a conversation.
The new Chat experience is now live on iOS and the web, and X says an Android version will be available soon. Meanwhile, the company is preparing a voice memo feature to allow users to send short audio messages, further expanding its communication functionalities.
X has been testing its new chat features for several months. Earlier this year, it rolled out an early version of encrypted messaging, but paused it in May due to technical issues. The latest release lifts some of those limitations.
According to X's help centre, both group chats and media files can now be encrypted, providing users with stronger privacy options.
This does not, however, conceal everything about the conversation. Metadata of messages, such as who received them, remains unencrypted.
X also acknowledges that the system doesn't yet protect against man-in-the-middle attacks, which could let a third party intercept a conversation without any indication to the other users.
The company says it is developing verification tools that will let users confirm the authenticity of their encrypted chats.
