Microsoft is bringing its Xbox Cloud Gaming service to a new and unexpected place: Cars. At its most recent showcase, the company announced that select cars will support streaming and playing Xbox games on entertainment screens for backseat passengers.

The feature will run on LG's Automotive Content Platform (ACP), the infotainment systems found in select vehicles. Using the same technology in LG smart TVs, the ACP feature will allow passengers to access the Xbox Cloud Gaming app via webOS.

With a controller and stable internet connection, passengers will be able to play any game found on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Currently, Microsoft has not specified which cars will support the features. However, LG has previously announced partnerships with KIA, meaning its European and Korean models will likely be some of the first vehicles to utilise it.

As cloud gaming requires solid connectivity, cars may also require a dedicated data plan to enjoy Xbox Cloud Gaming glitch- (or lag-) free.

While it may seem niche—you need to have a compatible car, a data plan, a controller, and a subscription—the possibilities are great.

For families and gamers on road trips, Xbox Cloud Gaming could turn the backseat into a full entertainment hub.
