X (formerly Twitter), the globally popular social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has come another step closer to rolling out its long-awaited new messaging feature, XChat.
According to reports circulating on the internet, the company has released the feature to select users as part of its initial testing.
Credible tipsters also suggested that XChat is exclusively available to beta testers who have subscribed to the platform’s premium service.
When will XChat be fully released?
Since the company has not officially announced a timeline for XChat's wider release, the messaging service is likely to be available to all users soon.
Given X's recent confirmation to have paused development on DMs, the much-wanted transition to XChat seems imminent.
XChat has reportedly been particularly designed to replace the existing direct messaging (DM) system, which has not seen many upgrades since Elon Musk's takeover of the platform.
Key features of XChat
While no specs have been disclosed by the Musk-owned company, Nima Owji, a reverse engineer on X, shared screenshots giving enthusiasts a sneak peek into XChat features.
Top XChat features include group messaging, end-to-end encryption, a vanishing mode, file sharing, and the ability to mark messages as unread.
The DM alternative is believed to significantly enhance the platform's functionality, in line with Musk's vision of integrating a secure, Signal-like messaging service within X.
