YouTube for Android is testing a new feature called the “Play Something” floating action button (FAB). This button aims to enhance user experience by offering a quick way to start playing videos based on user preference.
The “Play Something” FAB is a floating action button with white text on a black background, making it highly visible. When tapped, it starts a video in the Shorts layer.
What to expect from YouTube Play Something button
Interestingly, this feature is not limited to YouTube Shorts; it can also play regular content in the portrait interface.
Reportedly, the interface includes large buttons for like, dislike, comments and sharing on the right side, along with a timeline scrubber at the bottom.
When the mini-player is active, the “Play Something” button disappears, ensuring a clutter-free experience. The use of a FAB brings thematic sense as it allows users to quickly initiate the app's main content consumption purpose.
It is presumed that the button takes into account the user’s video preferences to provide a personalised experience.
YouTube Play Something button's availability
YouTube has been testing this feature since last year, but the most recent report of the "Play something" FAB comes from version 19.50 for Android. This feature is part of YouTube's ongoing efforts to roll out design updates and new features to enhance the mobile app experience.
