In a major development to curb the spread of maligning and AI-generated content, YouTube has removed hundreds of AI-generated videos after a legal challenge by Bollywood stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
The duo had filed a lawsuit in a New Delhi court, demanding the removal and prohibition of AI-generated content featuring the celebrity couple that infringed on their intellectual property rights.
The removal follows a judge ordering the takedown of a handful of YouTube links that the actors had sought, according to Reuters.
The publication's investigation revealed that despite the initial court order, YouTube was still hosting hundreds of similar videos, some depicting the celebrities in sexually explicit or manipulated scenarios.
One such channel, "AI Bollywood Ishq," had amassed 16.5 million views with its 259 videos before being taken down.
In response to the report, YouTube acknowledged the issue, stating that the channel in question was deleted by the creator, and that the company prohibits harmful misinformation and removes manipulated or doctored content that misleads.
With India housing YouTube's user base globally, the appearance of such AI-generated content on the platform has come under scrutiny.
The notable point is that the Bachchans are seeking a staggering $450,000 in damages against Google and other lesser-known websites offering unauthorised merchandise with their images.
The legal battle around AI-assisted content shows the growing concerns around the ethical use of generative technologies and the protection of celebrity rights in the digital age.
