Marking a major step towards the worldwide expansion of Elon Musk's satellite-based internet, Airtel has signed an agreement with SpaceX.

Airtel issued a statement outlining that its deal for the globally acclaimed satellite internet depends on SpaceX "receiving its own authorisations to sell Starlink in India".

"Airtel and SpaceX will explore offering Starlink equipment in Airtel's retail stores, Starlink services via Airtel to business customers, opportunities to connect communities, schools, and health centers, among many others, in even the most rural parts of India," it said.

While it moves closer to obtaining Starlink's high-speed internet even in remote areas, thanks to low Earth orbit satellites, the world's largest country by population is currently undergoing political turmoil in this regard.

That is partly owing to Musk engaging in a heated argument with Asia's richest man, Mukesh Ambani, on how broadband operators can secure the satellite spectrum.

SpaceX Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell said in the same statement that the company was "excited" to work with Airtel "... and unlock the transformative impact Starlink can bring to the people of India".

It's worth noting that Indian media reported last month that after Musk met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington last month, Starlink's licence application was about to be granted initial-stage regulatory approval.
