Apple is reportedly working on a major update to its Shortcuts app, and this time, AI is taking the lead.
Shortcuts is Apple’s built-in automation tool that helps users set custom commands on iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Whether it’s sending a daily reminder, turning on Do Not Disturb during meetings, or opening multiple apps with one tap, Shortcuts is all about making life easier with automation.
However, the tool hasn’t changed much in recent years, especially when compared to how fast artificial intelligence (AI) has grown.
Apple Shortcuts gets AI update
According to Bloomberg, Apple is finally stepping up. A new version of Shortcuts is in the works under Apple’s broader “Apple Intelligence” project, aiming to make automation smarter and easier through AI.
The upcoming upgrade will let users create shortcuts using natural language, meaning you could just type or say something like: “Start a video call and take notes during the meeting”, and it will set everything up automatically.
Apple is following a growing tech trend where AI is being built into everyday tools. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PCs are already using similar features, and Google and OpenAI are working together on open standards like Anthropic’s MCP to connect AI with outside apps and tools.
While Apple hasn’t officially confirmed this feature or adopted MCP yet, the development shows they’re taking AI automation seriously.
