Players of the Borderlands series finally have a date to put on their calendars. Gearbox Software has announced that Borderlands 4 will launch globally on September 12, 2025, and will bring a new take on its beloved looter-shooter gameplay.

For players that may be new to the series, Borderlands is a first-person action role-playing game that blends fast-paced gun combat with role-playing mechanics and cooperative gameplay.

The series has formed a loyal community over the years thanks to its upbeat and comedic cel-shaded art style. Borderlands 4 promises to expand the ever-growing universe with new characters, larger-than-life explosions, and wild adventures.

Along with the announcement of the launch date, Gearbox revealed the Borderlands 4 roadmap, which details what players can expect after launch. The plan features a variety of free updates and paid downloadable content (DLC) expansions, which could also be campaign missions or limited-time seasonal events.

The development team wants every player to stay engaged with the game long after their first time playing.

While many players are excited to revisit the franchise after the mixed reception to Borderlands 3 in 2019 and the strong initial sales, many fans felt it did not carry the charm that the series had previously delivered.

With Borderlands 4, Gearbox seems determined to reconnect with players and envision a plan to touch base with players further down the road.

As the countdown begins, the big question is whether this new entry can recapture the magic that made Borderlands 2 a fan favourite. If the roadmap delivers as promised, players may finally get the balance of fun, chaos, and depth they’ve been waiting for.
