Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a digital payment system for Metro Bus and Orange Line transportation across the province, marking a significant step toward modernising public transportation.

This move aligns with the provincial government's aim to improve accessibility, efficiency, and transparency in public transport operations.

Chairing a high-level meeting on the province’s transport sector and the Mass Transit Authority, the chief minister was briefed on the transition from the current token-based fare model to a streamlined e-payment system.

As part of the new plan, passengers will be able to pay fares using credit and debit cards, ATM cards, and mobile wallet applications.

Additionally, near field communication (NFC) technology will be enabled, allowing contactless payments across transit services in cities, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Islamabad.

The token system in the Orange Line train is expected to be phased out soon, replaced entirely by card and app-based payments.

As part of the broader vision for a unified transport system, a province-wide single fare card, dubbed the T-Cash card. has received formal approval. This card will work across all Metro Bus and Orange Line networks.

A separate version of the card tailored for students is also in the works.

The chief minister Punjab emphasised the importance of digitisation in public services and approved further initiatives, including the use of RFID stickers for vehicle management and the recruitment of technical staff to support the transport sector’s digital shift.
