Counting got underway Thursday in Pakistan's landmark elections after millions of people defied several restrictions, amid internet and mobile suspension to take part in an historic democratic transition in the country.

Polling stations officially closed at 5pm after a relatively large turnout in Pakistan, capping a dramatic day that saw digital catastrophe for the first time in the history of the country.

Two questions remain in everybody’s mind: what will be the results of elections? And, when will the internet and mobile services be restored?

In a not-so-surprising move, the caretaker government of Pakistan suspended mobile phone and internet services nationwide early morning in a bid to “maintain law and order”.

Reports suggest that the Ministry of Interior will likely restore services late at night. However, some claim that the services will remain suspended till tomorrow.

Pakistani journalist Saqi Tanveer shared on X (formerly named Twitter) that cellular services will stay offline for two days — Februray 8 and 9.

It should be noted that the suspension, which was being termed as “an unjust move”, initiated a debate throughout the world as this questions the transparency of elections.
