In a groundbreaking collaboration to expand its in-house artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Elon Musk's AI startup xAI is gearing up to invest $300 million in messaging platform Telegram to deploy its Grok.
Aiming to leverage Telegram's extensive user base of over one billion, xAI will pay Telegram in cash and stock under the one-year agreementwill, while also sharing half of any subscription revenue generated through the app, Reuters reported, citing Telegram founder Pavel Durov's post on X.
In light of insights into the deal disclosed by Durov, xAI will only access data shared by Telegram users during their interactions with Grok.
Responding to Durov's remarks, Musk clarified that while no formal contract has been signed, both tech giants have reached an agreement in principle.
The partnership is expected to provide xAI with enormous amount of data to train and enhance its AI models, as AI companies are nowadays facing challenges in sourcing quality data from open-source repositories.
Competitors, including Meta Platforms, have begun using public interactions for model training, as seen in their privacy policies.
The development marks the latest chapter as the Musk-led AI startup has been forming partnerships recently in order to strengthen its position in AI infrastructure and financial services.
