Meta has officially announced a major upgrade for Facebook Groups, giving users more ability to participate with a custom nickname and avatar, instead of joining groups with their real name or posting anonymously.

The American tech giant stated that you can easily set a custom nickname via the same toggle that allows you to create an anonymous post.

However, it should be noted that group admins need to first enable nicknames and approve them individually. Once enabled, you can easily use either your real name or nickname.

It should be noted that your nickname should comply with Meta's existing Community Standards and Terms of Service. Meta also allows you to select from a selection of custom avatars, which are mostly pictures of cute animals wearing sunglasses.

Earlier this month, Meta announced that Facebook Groups will allow admins to make their previously private groups public, without compromising the privacy of their existing members. Past content will remain private after the conversion, and member lists will be secured.

The company noted that after the conversion to public, new posts, comments, and reactions will be visible to anyone, including those who aren’t on Facebook, as with any other public group.
