Snapchat on Tuesday launched a new feature, named 'Topic Chats', which allows users to chat about what's happening in the world and across different communities.
With the 'Topic Chats' feature, your profiles remain private to anyone you're not friends with, helping prevent strangers' requests or direct messages.
However, users' display names will be visible next to their message; others won't be able to tap through to their profile from a 'Topic Chat', and unlike usernames, display names can't be used to search for someone.
Snapchat stated that it uses LLM technology and other safety measures to moderate the 'Topic Chats' feature to keep it safe, secure, and appropriate. It should be noted that the company will take action against users who violate its policies, including warning users and blocking accounts.
In a blog post, the company stated: “Snapchatters create billions of Snaps every day, sharing moments with friends and family, and as we’ve expanded services like Spotlight, we’ve also found that the Snapchat community loves commenting publicly about trending topics and events.”
'Topic Chats' will surface related Spotlight videos, which are the app's TikTok-like short-form videos.
Snapchat said that the 'Topic Chats' feature will be available for users in Canada, New Zealand, and the United States (US), planning further to expand to other regions.
