BMW is recalling almost 200,000 cars because of a possible fire hazard associated with the engine starter relay.
A flaw discovered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) could lead to the relay corroding, overheating, and short-circuiting, which would be a major fire hazard.
Until repairs are finished, owners are encouraged to park their vehicles outside and away from structures.
The 2019–2022 BMW Z4, 2019–2021 BMW 330i, 2020–2022 BMW X3, 2020–2022 BMW X4, 2020–2022 BMW 530i, 2021–2022 BMW 430i, and 2022 BMW 230i are among the roughly 196,355 BMW automobiles that are impacted by the recall.
The recall also covers about 1,469 Toyota Supra cars manufactured between 2020 and 2022.
BMW will replace the damaged starter relay at no additional cost. Because of limited parts availability, the recall will be carried out in stages.
On November 14, 2025, owners will receive interim notice letters in the mail. A second notice will be sent out when replacement parts become available.
Starting on November 14, owners can visit the NHTSA website and enter their number plate number or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to see if their vehicle is impacted.
Once parts become available, owners should wait for formal notification letters from BMW and then schedule a free repair at an authorised BMW dealership.
This isn’t the first time BMW has faced fire-related issues; in 2018, the company was fined $10 million by the South Korean government after 50 BMWs caught fire in a single year.
