Google Maps, one of the most widely used apps on Android, has been updating over the past few months to bring unique upgrades to enhance the user's experience.

Recently, Google announced the bottom bar redesign for the app at its I/O event in 2024 which is now set to roll out for Android users.

What’s new in the Google Map redesign

With the redesign, Google Maps goes from five tabs to three tabs only. The ‘Go’ and ‘Updates’ have been eliminated, while the ‘Explore’ remains unchanged.

Moreover, the functionality of the Go tab has been shifted to the ‘Saved trips’ that can be found under your lists in the centre feed.

Additionally, the ‘Saved’ tab has been renamed to ‘You’ while the contents are unchanged with the bookmark icon also at its older position.

The Messages and Notifications options which are present under the Updates tab (now called Following) are now shifted to the Explore tab and the search bar has also been removed from this tab.

Above the redesigned bottom bar, users may find the tall search bar however, the ‘Contribute’ option remains unchanged.

This redesign is based on the sheet-based redesign introduced earlier this month on Android, while these changes are not yet available on iOS. Users can avail of this bottom bar redesign with version 11.138.x of Google Maps for Android.
