Google Maps, one of the most widely used apps on Android, has been receiving several new updates over the past few months. However, the app has been again refreshed with a new look that is set to bring unique upgrades to enhance the user's experience.

What's changing?

The biggest change that has been rolled out for Google Maps is the switch from fullscreen UIs to sheet-based layouts, which means that the other elements including the map. This means that instead of taking up the whole screen, the map itself will be displayed in smaller, rounded corners.

The main aim of this change make the app feel lighter and more modern than before. You'll notice that the search bar is now smaller and more discreet, allowing you to focus on the map.

Additionally, the new design will enable you to switch between different modes more effectively, like driving, walking, or taking public transportation.

How does it work?

The upgrade works when you search for directions, the initial screen remains the same, but once you enter your destination, the top of the screen will only show the start and end locations.

The transportation modes switcher has been moved to the bottom of the screen for easier access. Sheets are used throughout the app to display information clearly and concisely.

Not only that, but it's also lining up a change that will see the bottom bar reduce to just three tabs: Explore, Commute, and Go — the former and latter already available, and the middle one new. This change will further make it easy to navigate inside the app and find what you want.

The new design will also be much more consistent across different devices and platforms, so you can look forward to a similar experience whether you're using Google Maps on either your phone tablet or computer.

The redesign is now rolling out to the stable channel of Google Maps on Android — version 11.136.x — but it's not live on iOS yet. If you are on an Android device, the update should be appearing pretty soon.
