Google has introduced several updates to its AI note-taking tool, NotebookLM, offering users more control over audio overviews and a new background listening option.

With millions of users worldwide, Google has removed NotebookLM’s “experimental” label and released new features for both individual and team-based projects.

New features coming to Google’s NotebookLM

The Audio Overviews feature on NotebookLM has been updated. It can now adapt to user preferences, providing a more personalised experience and allowing users to guide the conversation by focusing on particular topics and sources for specific audiences.

Moreover, the update also adds a background listening option that allows users to continue working without interrupting the audio experience within NotebookLM. Users can also query sources, receive citations, and explore relevant quotes.

To try the latest feature, follow these steps:

  • Go to NotebookLM
  • Create a new notebook
  • Now, add at least one source

On the NotebookLM guide, tap "Generate" for an automatic Audio Overview or "Customise" to provide instructions.

NotebookLM Business pilot programme

Alongside these new updates, Google has also introduced Google’s Gemini 1.5-powered NotebookLM Business pilot programme. The new business version is designed for larger teams, including more enhanced security and privacy measures.

These recent enhancements align with Google's goal of integrating AI-driven solutions into daily life while prioritising user privacy.
