In observance of Eid Milad-un-Nabi, the Balochistan government shut down internet services throughout the province from 6pm today (September 5) to 9pm tomorrow (September 6).
In the wake of internet suspension across the province, residents of Quetta, Noshki, Khuzdar, Mastung, and Sibi will not have access to mobile data services, including 3G and 4G.
Additionally, there will also be limitations on PTCL and NTC wireless internet services.
The government has claimed security concerns as the main justification for the suspension, stating that the measure was taken to prevent possible abuse of mobile networks during religious gatherings.
The internet suspension will be carried out by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). However, whitelisted and essential government numbers will not be suspended.
The frequent shutdowns have drawn criticism for interfering with information access, online commerce, and education.
Concerns about how such actions will affect the socioeconomic fabric of the province have been voiced by civil society and digital rights organisations.
The government was also ordered by the Balochistan High Court to examine general suspensions and reinstate services in regions that do not pose a threat.
To ensure public safety during the festivities, security personnel and emergency teams will be on high alert throughout the province, even with the internet shut down.
Residents and businesses in the impacted areas are anticipated to face inconvenience because of the internet suspension.
