Devastating floods in some parts of Punjab are disrupting life as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) announced special relief measures to keep affected residents connected.

According to PTA, mobile companies have provided subscribers in flood-hit areas free voice minutes. The facility allows residents with zero balance to make calls, enabling them to stay in connection with families and access emergency services they may require during the devastating storm and flooding.

“Connectivity is a lifeline in times of disaster. Free voice minutes will help residents in flood-affected areas remain in touch with their loved ones and contact emergency services if needed,” a PTA statement said.

The telecom regulator also commended the CMOs’ offering of free mobile services, saying the experience is part of broader initiatives to ease communication concerns during a natural disaster.

PTA said it will monitor the quality of communication among network providers in Punjab’s flood-affected regions to ensure connectivity is continually established during the disaster.

Heavy rains and flash floods have severely damaged several districts' infrastructure in Punjab, leaving thousands stranded across the districts. Rescue teams are working to relocate families to safer territory while relief efforts are continuing.

In these conditions, uninterrupted mobile connectivity is deemed to be a significant source in coordinating rescue efforts and allowing residents to seek help.
