Apple iPhone design guru Jony Ive has partnered with OpenAI to build devices that use generative AI.
OpenAI shared the announcement in a video posted on Wednesday.
Jony Ive joins OpenAI
Ive and his team join OpenAI to lead product design through the acquisition of his design startup "LoveFrom IO," a company valued at $6.5 billion.
In the video, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called the device prototype "the coolest piece of technology that the world will have ever seen."
He thinks that the next generation of AI innovation needs an entirely new type of interaction, not just typing into a screen, and he says that's where Ive comes in.
Known for shaping Apple’s iPod, iPhone, and Apple Watch, Ive says our current gadgets are outdated. “The products that connect us to unimaginable technology are decades old,” he said. “Surely there’s something beyond these legacy products.”
The first results of this collaboration will be available next year. There is so much happening in AI everywhere, and the AI hardware space is selling out in real-time.
Amazon is now adding AI on Alexa, and startups like Humane attempted to create AI-enabled wearables to launch devices, but they faced great challenges in performance, capability, and price.
Moreover, if anyone can change how we use AI in daily life, experts say it could be Ive. “If anyone can figure out the next-generation interface, it’s probably Mr Ive,” said Roger Beharry Lall, a tech industry researcher.
