A latest update regarding the launch of 5G has emerged on the scene, as State Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja has attributed the much-awaited 5G spectrum auction to the PTCL-Telenor merger and ongoing spectrum litigation cases.
While emphasising the resolution of these two critical issues, she stated that the government is willing to launch 5G services nationwide by the end of 2025.
As of now, Pakistan is operating on 274 MHz of spectrum, which was last auctioned in 2014.
According to PhoneWorld, the upcoming auction is expected to offer double the capacity of what Pakistan currently has.
The IT minister also emphasised efforts to enhance digital infrastructure, including fibre optic expansion, satellite internet access, and making smartphones more affordable.
In a bid to facilitate smartphone purchases through easy instalments, the government is also devising a new policy.
She announced that a comprehensive digital identity system is being developed under the Digital Pakistan Act, noting a 25% internet access growth in the country.
Pakistan has witnessed a $1 billion rise in Pakistan’s IT exports over the last two years, she remarked, adding that freelancers contributed $700 million.
Plans to train one million children under the country’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy were also disclosed alongside the provision of training to 100,000 individuals through DigiSkills in the past year.
