Jaguar's bold move: Electric-only brand by 2026, but at what cost?

Jaguar has launched its latest electric concept car namely “Type 00,” the company is planning to become an electric-only brand by 2026. The reaction on social media about the concept car is a mixture of “excitement” and “stunned,” meanwhile some critics state that “go back to the drawing board.”

Jaguar has also showcased its new logo and it has sparked controversies’ some have criticised the teaser while others think it is a bold move. 

The company have been facing a decline in sales significantly, 180,000 cars were sold in 2018 and 67,000 cars were sold last year. Jaguar Land Rover has halted there new car sales in the UK as a part of its relaunch strategy of only electric brand aim.

Jaguar’s “Type 00” was presented at the Miami art fair, even though it will not go to production it was represented to the public as a glimpse of the future. Type 00 is expected to be released with a cost of over £100,000.

Jaguar’s chief creative officer Gerry McGovern states that it doesn’t need to be loved by everyone. Analyst Karl Brauer believes that Jaguar is losing its heritage and moving toward an uncertain future.

The Centre of Automotive Research Director Beatrix Keim, censures and says that electric cars shouldn’t only cater for the wealthy, she added that the concept cars' size and market positioning are absurd.

Andy Palmer, former Aston Martin and Nissan executive has backed Jaguar’s idea but stresses upon making it electric. However, the company have been facing many challenges even though it had many profits through its Range Rover and Land Rover models.
