In a bid to bring about Pakistan's strides towards the development of a native Large Language Model (LLM), Jazz has taken the lead in collaboration with the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) and the National Information Technology Board (NITB).
The telecom giant's groundbreaking initiative is aimed at assisting Pakistan's AI landscape by creating AI-ready data in local languages.
As of now, the Jazz-led Pakistan's first local LLM is in the foundational phase of data collection and pre-training. However, the project will soon march towards fine-tuning, alignment, evaluation, and deployment. It's worth noting that a wide array of stakeholders from various sectors are expected to back this up.
Under the partnership, Jazz is reportedly providing the technical expertise and industry experience necessary, while NUST is contributing its research expertise.
Similarly, NITB is also playing a vital role in policy alignment and performance monitoring using a Joint Strategic Steering Committee to ensure that the project remains transparent and nationally relevant.
To serve this ongoing large-scale, national cause, Jazz has actively engaged other prominent institutions and stakeholders. One noteworthy account of Jazz's commitment to the project's successful attatinment is that the company established an AI Coalition to foster collaboration among industry and academic players in 2024.
Besides, Jazz recently hosted a workshop titled “AI for Humanity: Ethical and Inclusive AI in Pakistan,” in partnership with UNESCO.
