Spotify is set to transform the user experience with a more conversational voice AI interface, as the company's Chief Product and Technology Officer Gustav Söderström said during Spotify's second-quarter earnings call: "The company is using generative AI advancements to make the user experience more interactive."
Spotify's AI DJ feature has enabled users to request music in plain English, creating a valuable dataset that links specific phrases to corresponding songs, Söderström disclosed during the call.
He said: "You can think of it as us getting a new dataset." "Spotify has this unique dataset from all of its playlists... and that's totally new to us, and it's a very, very valuable dataset that we are gathering very rapidly."
This new technology has the potential to completely change how users engage with the platform.
Söderström pointed out that the AI technology will allow Spotify to "reason" over users' voice requests and listening history to provide a more individualised experience. "You can already communicate and write to Spotify. "That will simply grow," he continued.
Spotify's AI DJ feature, which debuted in May 2025, is the source of the audio data. With this feature, Premium subscribers can ask the English-language AI DJ to change playlists to suit their tastes by speaking to the DJ.
In addition to improving user experience, Spotify is using generative AI to expedite internal procedures like financial operations and product prototyping to address inadequate direction and worries about its advertising division, as CEO Daniel Ek has stated.
Spotify's creative approach to integrating AI is poised to revolutionise how users interact with music and audio content as the music streaming market develops.
