The enforcement of the new Karachi e-challan system began on Monday, and within just a few hours, the traffic police issued more than Rs12.5 million in fines for multiple violations.
The automated system issued more than 2,600 e-challans that addressed a variety of infractions. Overspeeding led to 419 tickets, lane violations resulted in 3, stop-line infractions in 4, and an overwhelming 1,535 were issued for failing to wear seatbelts.
Those who ran red lights received 166 fines, while 507 motorcyclists were penalised for not wearing helmets.
Wrong-way drivers received 3 challans, vehicles with tinted windows got 7, illegal parking resulted in 5 tickets, and 32 drivers were caught using their phones while driving.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah emphasised that modern surveillance cameras now capture these violations, monitoring cars, motorcycles, and rickshaws.
He remarked, “Traffic violations are now automatically recorded through advanced surveillance cameras, encompassing all vehicle types, including rickshaws, cars, and motorcycles.”
The newly implemented e-ticketing system eliminates human bias, enhances public safety, and improves service delivery.
The intention is to expand the camera network to 12,000 units, ultimately extending the system throughout the entire province of Sindh.
